If you only have 2 hours to help a group of autonomous L2 learners who are conducting research in the TL outside of a formal language classroom, what should you do? This is essentially the question I address in my new article: Explicit strategy instruction and extensive academic reading: Exploring the just-in-time model for autonomous learners. One of the interesting findings was that despite having a high level of overall proficiency as well as strong academic backgrounds in their L1, the learners’ key takeaway from the workshop was that reading strategies existed. This supports previous findings that strategy transfer between the L1 and the L2 is not always automatic. The article outlines a hands-on workshop model which can be adapted for various academic contexts.
